Did you know? Car keys and their signals

Car keys today are much more than just tools to unlock and start your car. They communicate with you and your vehicle in various ways, without you always being aware of it. Here are some of the ways car keys use signals to communicate with you and your car.

7 Ways to use car key signals

1. Remote control signal

When you press the button on your car key to unlock your car, the key sends a radio signal to the receiver in the car. This signal tells the car to unlock the doors and often also to turn on the lights.

2. Start signal

Modern car keys, especially those with keyless entry, send a unique signal to the car to confirm that you are the owner and have access. This allows you to start the car at the touch of a button, as long as the key is in range of the car. Does this button no longer work? Then it’s time to go to Car Door SOS.

3. Warning signal

If you forget to switch off your lights or leave the key in the ignition, car keys can emit warning signals. This could be a sound signal to remind you, or some keys even flash the headlights.

4. Battery level signal

Some car keys have a function to check the battery level. This is usually indicated by a light on the key that changes colour or starts flashing when the battery is low.

5. Alarm and panic signal

Most car keys have a button to activate the alarm. If you feel threatened or need help, you can also press the panic button and the car key will send a loud alarm signal to the car to attract attention.

6. Lock status signal

Some car keys can let you know whether your car is locked or not, usually by a light or an audible signal. This is useful to confirm that your car is secure.

7. Signal for tailgate or boot

If your car has an electric tailgate or boot, the car key can send a signal to open it without physically pressing the button in the car.

The key to efficiency

Car keys play an important role in modern driving, and understanding the signals they use can help you use your car more efficiently and safely. However, it is also important to be aware of the potential security risks, especially with keyless entry systems, and take appropriate precautions to protect your car from theft.
