Honda CR-V: known problems and what to look out for
The Honda CR-V is one of the best-selling compact SUVs in the world and is known for its reliability and practical usability. Even so, no model is completely free of technical problems. The CR-V also has specific weak points depending on generation and engine type. Think of oil dilution in certain turbo engines, electronic glitches and rust-prone spots on older versions. It is useful to know about these problems. That way you buy more consciously and avoid unpleasant surprises.
General reputation for reliability
Over the past decades Honda has built up a strong reputation as a manufacturer of reliable cars. In many reliability surveys the CR-V scores above average, especially compared to many competitors in the compact SUV segment. That does not mean the model is flawless. Certain model years show specific problems. These occur regularly among owners. When buying or maintaining one, you should therefore take the known technical points of attention for each generation into account.
‘ In the long term this can cause damage to the engine. ’
Engine problems that occur regularly
A much-discussed issue concerns oil dilution in the 1.5-litre turbo engine, which was introduced in the fifth-generation CR-V from 2017 onwards. Particularly on short journeys in cold weather, unburnt petrol can end up in the crankcase. This leads to dilution of the engine oil. In the long term this can cause damage to the engine. Honda has carried out recalls in several markets and released software updates to reduce the problem. In addition, there are reports of problems with the air conditioning compressor. In some models this fails prematurely. Symptoms include noises when the air conditioning is switched on. Cooling may also fail completely.
For more information about technical complaints with this brand, see Honda car problems for a broader overview of common issues.

CVT transmission and gearbox problems
The newer CR-V models are fitted with a CVT transmission (a continuously variable automatic gearbox). This transmission is generally reliable. Some owners, however, report complaints such as juddering when pulling away, vibrations or a delayed response when accelerating. This can indicate wear or software problems. Regular maintenance of the transmission fluid is important to extend its lifespan. In older models with conventional automatic gearboxes there are occasional complaints of shifting problems. Owners also report that the gearbox does not shift smoothly between gears. If in doubt, visit a specialist mechanic for a diagnosis.
Suspension and steering: noises and wear
Owners of various CR-V generations report noises coming from the suspension. This happens mainly when cornering or driving over bumps. Possible causes include worn bushes in the suspension, wear on stabiliser links or defective shock absorbers. In the fourth generation (2012–2016) there are specific complaints about noises from the front control arm bushes. These can crack or harden after a few years. This leads to creaking noises. Replacing these parts usually solves the problem. Power steering problems occur less frequently. With electric power steering there is sometimes heavy or slow steering. This can be the result of a defect in the steering unit.
‘ Regular maintenance and timely replacement of wear parts are needed to prevent problems. ’
Brakes: premature wear and noises
The brakes on the CR-V are generally reliable, but there are reports of premature wear of brake discs and pads, especially on models built before 2015. Squealing or grinding noises when braking often mean worn pads or rust on the discs. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of wear parts are needed to prevent problems. Hybrid versions sometimes have less wear thanks to regenerative braking. Even then it is important to have the braking system checked during services.

Electronic faults and infotainment
Modern CR-V models are equipped with advanced electronics. This also includes infotainment systems for radio, navigation and screen control. Some owners report glitches such as the touchscreen freezing. There are also complaints about problems with Bluetooth connections (wireless connection with your phone) or failure of the reversing camera. Software updates via the dealer can solve many of these problems. In addition, there are reports of defective sensors, such as parking sensors or the sensors of the adaptive cruise control system. This system automatically adjusts speed and distance. It is part of Honda Sensing. These sensors can give false alarms or stop working altogether. Checking and calibrating them at a Honda dealer is then necessary.
Rust formation and bodywork issues
Older generations of the CR-V are prone to rust formation in specific areas. This applies in particular to models built before 2012. Vulnerable spots are mainly the wheel arches, the bottom edges of the doors and the rear section of the sills. Salt spreading in winter speeds up this process. When buying second-hand, it is sensible to inspect these areas thoroughly. Later models have better rust protection. Even then you should check regularly. In addition, wash your car regularly with a protective wax treatment. There are also occasional complaints about flaking paint. Small cracks in plastic bumper parts also occur.
‘ Recalls are carried out free of charge at the dealer. ’
Recalls you should be aware of
Honda has carried out several recalls for the CR-V. Important recalls included the oil dilution problem in 1.5-litre turbo engines. Honda offered software updates and modified parts for this. In addition, there have been recalls for defective airbags (Takata airbags). There were also problems with the fuel system and electrical faults in certain model years. Check whether your car is subject to a recall. You can do this via the Honda website or the RDW. Recalls are carried out free of charge at the dealer.

Maintenance and preventive measures
Regular maintenance is the best way to prevent problems. Follow Honda’s maintenance schedules and have your car serviced preferably by a specialist garage. For the 1.5-litre turbo engine pay attention to the following:
- Warm the engine up regularly, especially after short journeys
- Check the oil level frequently and watch out for a smell of petrol in the oil
- Follow the recommended oil change intervals strictly
For the CVT transmission (continuously variable automatic gearbox) it is important to change the transmission fluid according to the schedule. Some sources describe this as ‘lifetime’. Even so, Honda recommends changing it. Check the suspension regularly for wear and rust. Investigate any noises in good time. Make sure that software updates for the infotainment system and safety systems are installed. Ask your dealer about available updates.
Buying a used CR-V: points to note
Are you considering buying a used Honda CR-V? Then pay attention to the following points:
- Check whether all recalls have been carried out. Do this online using the registration number via the RDW or Honda
- Request the maintenance history. Check whether servicing has been carried out according to the schedule
- Test the transmission for smooth gear changes without juddering
- Listen for unusual noises from the suspension during a test drive
- Inspect the wheel arches and sills thoroughly for rust
- Check the operation of all electronics, including infotainment and sensors
- For models with the 1.5-litre turbo engine: ask for proof that Honda has carried out the oil dilution countermeasure
If in doubt, have an independent inspection carried out. This costs a few tens of euros, but can save you much higher costs.
‘ A well-maintained CR-V will give you many years of reliable service and holds its value well on the used market. ’
The CR-V remains a sensible choice
The points of attention mentioned do not change the CR-V’s reputation. The Honda CR-V remains one of the most reliable choices in the compact SUV segment. You can manage most problems with regular maintenance. Timely checks are also essential. Newer models with hybrid drive in particular (a combination of combustion engine and electric motor) score well on reliability and fuel consumption. The CR-V offers generous interior space, practical load capacity and solid build quality. This makes the model suitable for families. The CR-V is also a good choice for people who cover a lot of miles. When buying, pay attention to the model year and engine version. Check the maintenance history thoroughly. Also ask about any recalls that have been carried out. Anyone who is aware of the specific points of attention for each generation and engine type can carry out targeted checks and maintenance. A well-maintained CR-V will give you many years of reliable service and holds its value well on the used market.
