The traditional season opener with a rich history

Previously, Formula 1 Australia acted as the season opener. This was the moment when it became clear which teams had made the right decisions over the winter. Teams that had made good choices could surprise, while others were immediately punished. A good example is the Brawn GP team, which made its Formula 1 debut in Australia in 2009. Despite low expectations, the team surprised everyone with its innovative double diffuser, leading to both pole positions and the first two places in the race. The team almost achieved a 50% win rate that season and was acquired by Mercedes afterwards, becoming the only constructor to win every championship it participated in.

Review of the previous Australian Grand Prix

The previous edition of the GP of Australia was extremely exciting and chaotic. At the time, the race was won by Max Verstappen in a way Formula 1 had never seen before. The race had no fewer than eight dropouts and three red flags, going into the books as the most red flags in a single race. Despite the messy race, Max Verstappen managed to keep his cool and take the lead in the standings from Checo Perez. Max verstappen shared the podium with Lewis Hamilton in second place and Fernando Alonso in third.

What to expect from F1 Australia 2024

Fans can look forward to an exciting race and qualifying on Albert Park’s narrow street circuit. Teams are expected to bring the first (major) updates, thanks to an intermediate week without races. This will provide an opportunity to make improvements based on the analyses of the first two races. The weekend promises to be extra exciting and could provide surprises in the expected rankings. Although qualifying remains crucial at this fast circuit, there are more overtaking opportunities thanks to an added fourth DRS zone.
