With these 8 karting tips you’ll be guaranteed faster on the track!
Karting isn’t just a fun sport, it’s also a battle to set the fastest lap time. (especially during qualifying) Want to win every kart race? Then these 8 tips will help you get started!
1. Perfect race posture for optimal control
Your seating position largely determines how well you can control the kart. Keep your back straight against the seat and make sure your hands are firm but relaxed on the steering wheel. This gives you maximum control over the kart and helps with quick steering reactions. If your kart track offers special seats, definitely give them a try. You’ll sit more securely in the kart and be able to control it better.
2. Learn the ideal racing line in advance
The fastest route around the track isn’t always the shortest. Try to drive a smooth line, enter corners wide, cut in sharply and exit wide again. This minimises speed loss and ensures a smoother driving style.
3. Brake at the right moment
Braking too late causes skidding and bouncing, while braking too early costs you speed. The golden rule: brake hard before a corner if needed, then release the brake and steer in. This way, you’ll keep maximum grip and speed out of the corner.
4. Accelerate smoothly out of corners
Don’t stamp on the throttle as soon as you come out of a corner. Gently press the accelerator and make sure your wheels keep grip so you can accelerate optimally without spinning out.
5. Look ahead and anticipate
Many beginners look just in front of their kart, but that’s not ideal. For a quick lap time, always look ahead towards the apex/kerbstones.
6. Use your weight to your advantage
Your body position can give you just that little bit of extra speed. Lean slightly forwards on the straights for less air resistance and shift your weight subtly in corners to optimise grip.
7. Use the full track
Many kart tracks in the Netherlands have grass kerbs along the circuit. Make smart use of these: the wider you take a corner the more speed you can carry out of it.
8: Follow the experienced drivers
Keep an eye on people in racing outfits. Often these are experienced and know what they are doing. Try to follow their racing lines during the heat and you will soon get much faster yourself.
