A reliable electric car: our top 6

Electric cars have gained ground in recent years, but some remain sceptical about their reliability. The good news is that it’s time to put those doubts to rest. A recent survey of 13,000 electric cars by British car website WhatCar has shown that reliability is no longer an issue. Below we’ve listed our top picks for a reliable electric car:

1. Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 tops the list. The most affordable model from Tesla turned out to be extremely reliable, with only 5 percent of owners reporting issues, mostly related to the interior. Fortunately, all of these matters were resolved quickly and efficiently.

2. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona Electric also scores highly, with just one battery issue affecting around 7 percent of owners. Although this kept cars in the garage for about a week, all issues were resolved under warranty.

3. BMW i3

The BMW i3 also scored excellent results, with minimal issues with the GPS system and the interior. Most cars spent just a week in the garage before they were back on the road.

4. Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace sits in the middle of the list and actually had just one issue: the brakes, specifically the regenerative braking system used to generate electricity. Happily, this issue was also sorted quickly and free of charge under warranty.

5. Nissan LEAF

Although the Nissan LEAF confronted nearly 15 percent of owners with problems involving electrical systems unrelated to the motor, or the infotainment system, most issues were resolved swiftly, with the majority covered by warranty.

6. MG ZS EV

Finally, the MG ZS EV also proves to be trouble-free. Only 7 percent of owners had to visit the dealer, mostly for battery and electric motor issues. Although this took some time, all repairs were covered by warranty.

In short, it’s clear that electric cars are overcoming their reliability issues. So, if you’re looking for an environmentally friendly and reliable electric car, feel free to consider one of these top models. Reliability no longer needs to be a concern in the world of electric mobility.
