Audi RS6: affordable or out of reach?
The Audi RS6 is a dream for many: blisteringly fast, but with a sensible side. It’s always been an expensive car, and in recent years the prices have skyrocketed. Still, an Audi RS6 doesn’t have to be unattainable…
How much does an Audi RS6 cost?
In Audi’s line-up, the A6 is a large, grown-up car, with only the prestigious A8 – the flagship – above it. Considering its size, quality and luxury, the A6 comes with a hefty starting price. In 2025, the cheapest version already costs over €60,000. The RS6 is considerably more expensive.
Brand new, you’ll pay at least €215,000 for the ‘standard’ RS6, and that’s without any options or extras. The 30 bhp more powerful Performance version is just under €10,000 dearer. Affordable? Not really, but in return you get one of the most powerful and impressive family/business cars in the world.
Why is an Audi RS6 so expensive?
The Audi RS6 (new) has never been less than six figures. That’s naturally due to the time and effort the manufacturer puts into one of its most desirable models. In many ways, the RS6 embodies the motto “Vorsprung durch Technik”. The super estate and saloon are packed to the brim with the latest technical innovations, from the renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system to intelligent adaptive suspension.
The engines are also hugely impressive. The most recent RS6 (2019–2024) for instance is powered by a 600–630 bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, complete with a 48V mild hybrid system and cylinder deactivation. That makes a limited top speed of 250 km/h easily achievable – or up to 305 km/h with the RS dynamic plus package.
Which Audi RS6 models are cheap?
That a new Audi RS6 costs a lot should come as no surprise. However, you don’t have to spend a fortune to own one. It’s a popular performance car, so there are many used Audi RS6 cars for sale. Take the third generation, for example, built between 2013 and 2018. Second-hand cars of this generation can already be found for under €50,000. And those aren’t all tired, battered old bangers.
The Audi RS6 is generally known as a reliable, high-quality car. The only thing to keep in mind is that running and maintenance costs are higher than you’d expect from a normal car – but that’s the case with any high-performance vehicle. And of course, check the service history. Used examples from earlier RS6 generations are even more affordable.
Alternatives to the Audi RS6
If you’re unsure whether the RS6 is the right choice for you, there are a few alternatives to consider. An obvious option is the Audi RS4, essentially the RS6’s little brother. If you’re after a more sporty driving experience, then the Audi R8 might be the answer.
This striking two-seater sports car is closely related to the Lamborghini Gallardo/Huracán, and delivers sizzling performance. If your budget is smaller, then the Audi TT is definitely worth considering. This stylish two-door is a brilliant cruiser as standard, but is also available as the sportier TT-S or TT RS.
