What technical steps can I take myself to find the cause of a glow plug fault in a diesel engine?
First, read out the fault codes with an OBD scanner and note when the light is on or flashing and whether there are starting problems or loss of power. Then visually check the wiring, connectors, fuse and glow plug relay for damage, corrosion or loose contacts. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of each glow plug and check whether supply voltage is present during preheating; a plug that differs significantly or is open circuit is suspicious. If there are several fault codes, limp mode or unclear test results, consult a garage, as the engine management system or another diesel system may also cause the warning.
