Dutch car registrations: a look back and forward
August brought good news for the Dutch automotive industry. But before we dive into the details, let’s look at the numbers. In that month, a whopping 27,825 new passenger cars were registered. That is an impressive 18.6 per cent increase compared to the same month last year, when the number stood at 23,459. A big boost, but if we look back to previous months, we see an interesting pattern.
A look back at the past few months
Indeed, in July, growth was even more impressive, with a whopping 30.7 per cent increase over the previous year. And going back even further to June, we even saw a jump of 38 per cent. This suggests that growth is now starting to level off. Why? Let’s dig deeper.
Analysis of car registrations
It is important to note that this is not about selling new cars, but registering them. At the moment, not so many new orders are being placed, but mostly delivered. Backlogs from 2022 are being cleared, and showrooms are well stocked again.
Electric cars and consumer expectations
Still, consumers seem to be cautious, especially when it comes to electric cars. Many people are postponing their decision to switch to electric driving, waiting for more clarity on future subsidy measures.
Strong registration figures in September
The upward trend continued in September, with 29,855 cars registered, representing a growth of more than 16 per cent compared to the same month last year. This is according to data from BOVAG, RAI Association and RDC.
Remarkable growth in the first nine months of the year
If we look at the first nine months of this year, we see a notable increase in the total number of Dutch registrations, to 286,781. That is a whopping 27 per cent more than the same period last year, when 224,708 cars were registered. A clear sign of recovery and growth in the automotive industry.
What can we expect?
All in all, there are positive signs for the Dutch car industry, but consumers remain cautious and there are still some challenges to overcome. Let us hope that growth continues to increase steadily and that we will soon have more clarity on the future of electric driving in the Netherlands.
