Volkswagen Transporter updated: more space, smart technology and extra choice
A commercial vehicle has to be able to do quite a lot. Carry tools, transport materials and get you comfortably to the next job. With its latest generation, the Volkswagen Transporter offers more space, modern technology and a broader range of drivetrains. In addition to diesel and fully electric driving, there is now also a plug-in hybrid. What do these developments mean for your working day?
More space for everything that needs to come along
The latest Transporter is longer and wider than its predecessor. You notice this most in the rear: the standard version has a load volume of 5.8 cubic metres. For business owners who are on the road every day with tools, parcels or building materials, that extra space is a practical advantage. You have more scope to organise the load area neatly and give your kit a fixed place.
There is also a choice when it comes to payload. Depending on the version, a diesel Transporter can carry up to 1,300 kilograms. Which version suits you therefore depends on what you transport. A plumber with a fully equipped workshop in the back has different requirements from a business owner who mainly delivers light goods.
New: the Transporter eHybrid
One important development is the arrival of the Transporter eHybrid, which has been in showrooms at Dutch dealers since June 2026. This plug-in hybrid combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. Together, they produce 233 hp. The maximum towing weight is 2,300 kilograms, so a trailer is also an option.
The advantage lies mainly in the combination of two drivetrains. Short journeys can be driven electrically, while the petrol engine remains available for longer distances. Volkswagen lists an electric range of up to 54 kilometres according to WLTP on the current model page. In practice, factors including load, temperature and driving style determine how many kilometres you achieve.
Can you charge regularly at home or at work? Then the eHybrid gives you the option of covering part of your daily mileage without petrol. While driving electrically, you also benefit from a quiet drivetrain, which is particularly pleasant for early starts and busy working days.
A more comfortable workplace
Anyone who spends a lot of time on the road will rack up plenty of hours behind the wheel. Volkswagen has therefore also reworked the cabin. The cockpit is more spacious and more intelligently laid out, with a digital instrument panel that clearly displays key driving information.
There are also modern driver assistance systems and different trim levels. The Life, for instance, adds extra comfort with automatic climate control and a more extensively adjustable driver’s seat. The Bulli goes further with, among other things, navigation, LED matrix headlights and a 360-degree camera. The latter can be particularly useful when manoeuvring in tight spaces.
The latest addition: Signature Edition
The Transporter continues to evolve in terms of appearance too. In October 2026, Volkswagen introduced the Signature Edition package for the Transporter and e-Transporter panel van Bulli. It includes carbon-look spoilers, black accents and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, eco leather and Dinamica accents create a more luxurious finish. An interesting addition if your commercial vehicle is also the calling card of your business.
