Battery problems are one of the most common complaints with older Volvo XC70 models. An ageing battery affects starting reliability. In addition, odd electrical faults can appear that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with the battery. How long does an XC70 battery last?

The original battery in a Volvo XC70 lasts an average of three to six years. After that, capacity gradually declines, especially if the car is used for lots of short journeys or is left standing for long periods. In diesel versions, the battery has to work harder for a cold start. Ageing therefore becomes noticeable more quickly.

Volvo recommends driving the car for at least fifteen minutes every week so that the alternator can charge the battery sufficiently. If you do not do that, an older battery will run flat more quickly. In that case, a smart trickle charger is a practical solution, especially in winter or when the car is standing for longer periods.

Symptoms of battery problems in the XC70

A weak battery shows itself in several ways. Sometimes the signs are obvious. In other cases, the symptoms seemingly point to something completely different. Owners report the following symptoms, among others:

  • Difficult starting, especially in low temperatures or after standing overnight
  • A weak or sluggish starter motor
  • Error messages on the dashboard without a clear cause
  • Weakening lighting system
  • Glitchy electronics, such as the heating or infotainment system
  • Battery going flat after a few days of standing

It is striking that a new battery can sometimes solve several of these complaints at once. What looks like a complex fault then turns out to be the result of an ageing battery. Quite simply, the battery is no longer delivering enough voltage. A faulty alternator, parasitic draw or a poor battery sensor can also produce exactly the same picture.

Check for parasitic draw and earth connections

If the battery keeps going flat while the car is not being used, parasitic draw may be the cause. In that case, an electrical consumer is drawing power unnecessarily, even when the car is switched off. A healthy battery should hold a voltage of around 12.6 volts after two days standing. Does the voltage drop further? Then the battery is probably worn out or there is a parasitic draw.

When dealing with battery problems, also check the earth connections and battery terminals for corrosion. Old or poor earth points can make starting and voltage problems worse. They are often overlooked during diagnosis.

How do you determine the battery condition?

A simple voltage measurement does not give the full picture. Have the battery tested at a garage or by a car specialist for capacity and cold-start performance (the ability to deliver enough current at low temperatures for starting). This is done using a so-called load test. During this test, the battery is measured under load so you know whether it still delivers sufficient power for a cold start.

Also check the alternator’s charging voltage. With the engine running, the voltage should roughly be between 13.8 and 14.4 volts. If the reading consistently stays below 13.8 volts, the alternator is not charging the battery sufficiently. In that case, replacing the battery alone will not solve the problem.

Which replacement battery suits the XC70?

When choosing a replacement battery, two specifications are important: capacity in ampere-hours (Ah, the amount of energy the battery can store) and cold-cranking rating in amperes (CCA, or Cold Cranking Amps — this indicates how much current the battery can supply in freezing temperatures to start the engine). The CCA figure is especially decisive for a reliable start in low temperatures.

When choosing a replacement, bear the following in mind:

  • Choose at least the same Ah capacity as the original battery, or higher if you have many electrical consumers
  • Keep the CCA rating at least equal to the original specification, especially for diesel engines
  • For models with Start/Stop, choose an AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat — a special battery type with fibreglass plates that is better able to withstand the extra load of Start/Stop systems). This battery type is designed for situations in which the battery is charged and discharged quickly and frequently, such as in Start/Stop driving. It lasts longer in that use
  • Check whether the battery sensor needs to be reset after replacement. On some XC70 models, the on-board computer records the battery condition and must be reset after fitting a new battery

A wrong battery causes faster wear or faults in the charging system. If in doubt, consult the handbook or ask a specialist for advice on the right specifications for your version.

Maintenance tips to prevent battery problems

Prevention is better than replacement. With a few simple measures, you can keep your XC70’s battery in good condition for longer:

  • Drive the car for at least fifteen minutes every week so the alternator can top up the battery
  • Use an automatic trickle charger during long periods of inactivity to prevent discharge
  • Limit the use of the auxiliary heater on short journeys, as this drains the battery more quickly
  • Have the battery checked annually if the car is more than three years old

Volvo states that after a deep discharge, a battery must first be sufficiently recharged before the car is used normally again. At temperatures below fifteen degrees, this takes three to four hours with an external charger. Never charge the battery only partially and assume that the problem has been solved, because a recently charged but weakened battery can still fail unexpectedly.
